CREATIVE WRITING

Find Your Voice. Create Your World. Tell Your Story.

Every story begins with imagination.

In Creative Writing, students are encouraged to explore that imagination while learning the tools writers use to transform an idea into a story that someone else cannot put down.

Rather than focusing primarily on rules, worksheets, or formulas, this course approaches writing as a creative craft. Students learn by creating characters, inventing worlds, writing scenes, experimenting with dialogue, and developing stories that genuinely interest them.

We begin with one of the most important questions a writer can ask: What makes us care about a story?

Students explore character, motivation, conflict, setting, point of view, dialogue, description, pacing, and plot. They learn how writers create curiosity, build tension, reveal information, and make readers want to turn the page.

Special attention is given to developing characters who feel like real people. Students explore what their characters want, what stands in their way, what they fear, and how the events of a story can change them.

Students are also encouraged to develop their own writing voice rather than trying to make every piece of writing sound the same. Depending on individual interests, students may work on short stories, scenes, character pieces, personal narratives, or longer original projects.

Students May Explore:

• Generating original story ideas • Character creation and development
• Plot and story structure • Conflict and stakes
• Setting and world-building • Point of view
• Dialogue • Description and imagery
• Creating suspense and curiosity • Beginnings and endings
• Developing an individual writing voice • Revising without losing creativity
• Giving and receiving constructive feedback

Creative Writing is designed to help students become more confident writers while preserving the most important part of writing: the joy of having something to say.

You already have a voice. Let’s discover what you want to do with it.
